So the show I auditioned for is a no-go.
I got an email this morning saying that I did not have a spot in the show, but thanks anyways. Oh well... such is theater business.... though I can't lie, I am a bit disappointed.
I had time to work out this morning, then went to hang out with a representative from another Christian group on-campus called Christian Challenge. She was fun to talk to, and we completely lost track of time while we were there! I had to quickly go back to my room, grab my stuff for class, and take my bike over to Parkside to get brunch. I made it into class 5 minutes before it started, but it was good!
After class, some classmates and I met up to talk about our project for our acting class.
Have I mentioned how absolutely brilliant people here are? Really, there is such an amazing collection of brilliant, talented, outright incredible people. Today was certainly one of those days where I didn't feel I fit that standard again.
The next entire hour and a half consisted of me wandering around campus, being unable to make up my mind of what to do. What I did do was go back to my dorm, then go to Starbucks for a smoothie, go to the Drama Center to pick up a key for my acting class's project rehearsal room on Sunday, go back to Starbucks for a scone I'd had my eye on, wander around Doheny library, and then finally settle at Leavey Library.
While I was at the Drama Center, I ran into a boy and girl and a mother who were on a tour of the Drama school. This was where they started, but it was very obvious that they were visitors.
"Are you guys touring?" I asked
"Yes," they said.
"Prospective drama majors then?"
"Yup."
The next thing that came to my head to do was sing the beginning of a song from the musical, Pippin:
Join us! Leave your fields to flower... Join us..."
Those were the only lyrics I knew, but you get the idea. They both laughed and one said, "I love that song" as I walked away to go pick up the key. They were still there when I got back, so I commented,
"You guys got that song stuck in my head!" And I continued to sing the only other part of the song I know:
We've got magic to do! Just for you!
They stopped me before I left and asked if I was a student in the drama school. I said yes, of course. I ended up talking with them for a couple of minutes just about the school and answering some of their questions. They're both high school seniors, one from Arizona and the other from Colorado. I did my best to answer, even though I'm just a freshman, but I hope what I said helped them out and they enjoyed their tour. It was fun for me!
I should be a tour guide on campus. Sneha, if you're reading this, send me that link you've been promising about that!!!
Anyways, my other adventure within my journeys was after I got my scone. I sat down to eat it in the courtyard of Literatea, and a squirrel saw me eating it. He literally looked straight at me munching, put his little paws to his mouth, and acted like he was eating.
Then he crept... ever so slowly and stalkeresque.... right up to the flowerpot next to where I was sitting.
It kinda creeped me out. I've heard stories of these squirrels just jumping onto people. This one looked like it was ready to hop right on my shoulder and snatch the scone out of my hands, and I was NOT about to pet it!
I threw it a crumb, and admired it as it greedily munched it up. I could tell after that, it wanted more. It continued to creep ever so near to me... again, making me think it was going to jump right on me... but I just didn't make eye contact and, (I'm sorry to admit it), talked to him a little. "No, that's all you get. Shoo now."
He ended up climbing up a tree, skirting all the way around me, and then, on the ground, moving closer and closer to my toes. My feet were stretched out in front of me, as I was leaning back. It was just about to reach my toes...
...when I wiggled them.
The squirrel jumped what seemed like ten feet in the air and ran so quickly away I couldn't help but laugh out loud. All that, and he's scared of my toes!!! It was adorable. :)
Anyways, I ended up in Leavey, where I attempted to study a bit... didn't really go well. I did finish "Hedda Gabler" though. It has an ending that's needing to be discussed....
Jinny and I went to dinner at Parkside, and wandered through the bookstore and the campus center on our way back. Then we finished watching The Phantom of the Opera... It's so beautiful.... We've both been singing it nonstop since we finished watching it...
Why are sad stories beautiful? What makes them beautiful? Is it just the singing, in this case? Or is it something deeper? Why is there beauty in tragedy? What is it about the story itself that makes it resonate with people and draw them closer to it? Pity? An almost happy ending? Who knows?
So now we're just getting ready for bed. I'm trying to plan out my weekend too. It's going to be a full one! Turn on your TV's tomorrow, folks. The Coliseum is going to be lit up bright with Cardinal and Gold, and I expect that you'll be cheering for the right team. ;)
Fight on, friends.

I feel Famous...- September 5, 2013
Have you ever have one of those days where right after you wake up, something happens that tells you right off the bat that it's gonna be a great day?
That was today.
I woke up a little later than I wanted to, and still felt super tired and sleepy, but while I was going through my typical Internet rounds (email, Facebook, Youtube), a new episode of a Youtube show I watch caught my eye.
Youtube is my TV. I don't really watch TV shows, I have to decide and be in the right mood to watch a movie, but Youtube is quick, simple, and much more realistic to me, which I like.
Anyways, this one channel was called rhettandlink2. The two guys that run it are named Rhett and Link (as you could guess from the name). They run a show every weekday morning that they've just launched again called "Good Mythical Morning," which is basically their own version of a talk show.
Anyways, on their Facebook page a while ago, they asked for things they could give people advice on. I decided to respond, being a new college freshman, and because these two are funny and it would be interesting to see what they'd have to say.
This morning, this video caught my eye... Watch the first bit.
AAAAHHHHH!!!!
RHETT SAID MY NAME!!!!!!!!
I feel so famous!!!! This is seriously cool!!!!!
Ok, ok, I know some of you are going to be concerned about privacy and my full name on the Internet and all that jazz. But STILL!!! I feel so cool!!!!!
For the record, I am not related to Reba McEntire. :)
Or am I.... someone let me know if that's true!
So feeling absolutely ecstatic, I went off to meet up with a professor at the Thorton School of Music about voice lessons. The cost is a little steep, but she liked me and thought I had a good-sounding voice, so we're going to meet every other week. That's a bit cheaper, and clearly more easy for her, so I'm happy with it!
I had a longer break than expected after that, so I practiced for my audition again before going to my Text Studies Class. Hedda Gabler is getting really interesting! I can't wait to finish it, but I'm going to wait until after my discussion session tomorrow so I don't have an unfair advantage in the discussion.
Immediately after, I went to my acting teacher's office for her office hours, and she helped me with my audition monologues. Correction, she transformed my audition monologues. I have some habits I get into with monologues, I guess, but she really helped me straighten them out. It was wonderful!!!
I went after that to grab some really late lunch before my next class. Spanish is alright.
Walking back to my dorm from Spanish, I realized that that time of day, the early evening turning into sunset and the sunset, is my favorite time of day. It's beautiful and cool and fresh and lovely....
Anyways, I practiced for another hour and grabbed dinner from EVK. Dinner was really disappointing. I thought they'd have something I saw earlier in the day, but they didn't. I should've gone to the Campus Center :P
For the record, don't feed me pizza when I come home. I'm not sick of it, persé, but it is the food that got me through today...
Then I had my audition! It was really relaxed, and I think I did well. I certainly did much better than I would have without the help I got! I celebrated with cookies from Seeds :)
To end the evening off, I sat in the lounge... wanting to be productive, but I watched the 25th anniversary performance of Phantom of the Opera instead. I've forgotten how absolutely stunning that musical is!!!! I watched all of Act 1, then got ready for bed, and now I'm here.
Today's a good day. Please be praying still though: people all over the floor are getting sick. Yikes!!!
:) Fight on, friends.

Care package!!!!!- September 4, 2013
Today was much better than yesterday.
Basically, yesterday I let myself get too overwhelmed and carried away with that, and didn't handle very many problems that came up well... Today I felt more sorted-out and in-control, like I had a bit more power over what I should be doing and shouldn't be doing.
Except one thing: I'm not going through with Kitty Bungalow after all, and that makes me sad. A lot of people expressed concern over the location of the Bungalow, and me getting there all on my own, plus this semester is going to be hectic enough, and I could use every hour I can get... It breaks my heart, honestly... I feel so guilty... and felt even more guilty about it yesterday.... but we'll see how things turn out later, I guess.
Anyways, have I mentioned how much I love my acting class? It is more than worth getting up early to get to class at 8am. Today, I learned how to create panic in a scene, set up a time tomorrow to work with Mary Joan on a monologue, and also learned the actual story behind the "What a to do to die today" poem... I'll never think of it the same way again!!! Message me if you want to know: it's a tad extensive to explain for such a little ditty.
I just love love love that class. So much.
Anyways, I had my discussion session for Philosophy, then came back to the dorm to study in the lounge for a while. I ended up working for longer than I thought: I found new monologues, did my Spanish and Text Studies homework, and then practiced for my audition tomorrow before going to lunch with Jinny and Thomas! We had a great time. Thomas is going to bring us to Disneyland ;) Well, we hope so.... (please?)
My philosophy class was after that, and to be honest, the topic was really intriguing: Does God exist? Unfortunately, about halfway through the class I got super tired and sleepy-feeling.... it was so hard to stay attentive... I didn't really, for part of the discussion, but I did get some interesting notes from what I was attentive to, and actually stayed after class to talk with the professor about somethings we mentioned in the discussion. I felt pretty stupid talking to him. Not because of condescention or anything, he just knows his stuff really, really well. It's a bit hard to follow... but when I didn't know something, I admitted it, and now I have two questions to ponder to myself when I'm feeling philosophical:
1) Was there a time before matter existed, and then a time after matter existed? Or did time and matter come into existence at the same time? What do I think on this and why? What is the evidence to support it? (this one I'm pretty lost on... It's a really abstract concept for me to consider, really)
2) Why should God be an exception for not needing a cause to exist, while everything else in the universe must have a cause of existence? What is the argument for this?
So yeah. I'll be mulling those over when I find time to think of them...
The weather was so perfect outside this evening... I actually dismissed some plans I had made to go to a Bible Study and a meet-up with Christian leaders that I could've gone to just so I could sit outside on my blanket, work on homework, and enjoy my FIRST CARE PACKAGE!!!!!!
But mostly homework. I promise. The other parts were icing on the cake.
BUT MY FIRST CARE PACKAGE!!!!
I have the best family ever. Ever ever ever. They sent me stuff to clean off my laptop and phone safely, my favorite audition shirt, tweezers, popcorn, and... get this
LORD OF THE RINGS
I have, in my possession, the extended editions of Lord of the Rings!!!! Which I really wanted!!!! And my family listened because they love me so so much!!!!! I'm seriously ecstatic!!! My friends and I are watching the first one this weekend :D
Speaking of my friends, I met up with them for dinner after I finished my assignments due tomorrow. It was Hawaiian Luau night at EVK, which was.... a little underwhelming (who plays blasting rave music at a Luau?) but the food was good and the cake was better. We had an awesome time with the photo booth too!!
I came back to my room, but left it again shortly after to go scout out a place to practice my audition and singing. What I found was a vermin-infested courtyard between two of the buildings on campus. It was sufficient enough, and it's at the time of night where not too many people are around to give me weird looks. I enjoyed myself, and got work done, but I might use the music practice room next time... even though more people will be able to hear me.... :/ I don't know why I have a problem with that while I'm practicing. I get self-conscious, I guess.
And now, I'm back in my room trying to finish this stupid Spanish online homework. It's not due tomorrow, but I'm trying to get it done to stay on top of things. The problem is we have to get 100% on these online assignments in order to get a 100% on this section of our grade. We're allowed to take it as many times as we want... but it's taking me way. too. long. to get a 100%. Gaaahhh!!!!!! Stupid listening section!!!!
Two to go... just two to go....
But man, today had some great highlights in it :)
Thanks for bearing with me, guys. Fight on.

Tuesdays Suck- September 3, 2013
Getting this blog over with before I keep doing homework.
Today was a bad day. I don't really feel like explaining because not much happened and it's not a big deal, anyways. The biggest adventure was my Acting Workshop after my class this evening, which was informative and nice. I love my major.
I have lots of homework. And there's an audition I have to prepare for later this week. Just overwhelming stuff.
Philosophy is hard to read about. It's due tomorrow.
I feel sick. Probably stress or something.
But why does it matter anyways?
Whatever. Fight on, friends.

Baby Kittens!!!- September 2, 2013
Today's adventure had me in the midst of the LA ghetto. On my bike.
I got to sleep in this morning, which felt awesome, even though I was still pretty tired when I got up. I didn't have much time between my late breakfast and the time I was supposed to be at Kitty Bungalow (explanation in a moment!), so I had to grab some directions and head out the door.
The Bungalow is about 2 miles away from my dorm tower, so naturally, I planned to bike. Especially because stupid Campus Cruiser doesn't work when your destination is outside a one-mile radius from campus (come on guys).
It's crazy how quickly the scenery around you changes once you're out of reach from the university. The stores on the sides of the street look so run-down all of a sudden. I biked down a residential side-street and the entire road smelled like trash. It was trash pick-up day, I suppose. The streets were hard to navigate, and I was worried every two minutes that some car was going to slide up behind me and run me to the ground.
I finally got to the area where the Bungalow was supposed to be, but the address of the place looked like.... an abandoned house. There were people in the back working, but no sign or anything... I expected there to be a sign, at least. I pulled out my iPhone to see if I was actually in the right place, but soon another USC student pulled up to the same house and confirmed that I was in the right place. We went inside, and it immediately smelled like cats. It was a really pretty house, even though it was old and there was renovation happening, but I was taken aback by the location and the journey there, so it was hard to appreciate right away.
I warmed up to it eventually though.
Ok, explanation time: Kitty Bungalow is a home/school for feral kittens. It was really started by accident: the owner of this house discovered a colony of cats living around her house, and there were kittens involved. She adopted them out, but there were more and more kittens. After doing some research and realizing just how many kittens are born every year and never given a chance at homes, she created Kitty Bungalow to take them in, socialize them, and then adopt them out to loving homes. Normally they only take in kittens, because kittens are more easy to train and socialize, and because people want to adopt kittens more than they do adult cats. However, they also practice TNR around the neighborhood: humane trap, neuter, and release. Cats are trapped, brought back, spayed or neutered, given all necessary vaccines and treatments they may need in the rest of their lifetime, and then released back into their colony. This helps eliminate the problem of multiple kittens being born that won't get good treatment or homes, and also helps the remaining adult cats to live longer, healthier lives.
Anyways, the kittens brought back to the Bungalow are worked with, taken care of, and eventually adopted out.
I first heard about Kitty Bungalow at the USC Work-Study job faire. There was a booth out, and even though I'm not Work-Study, the idea of getting to play and volunteer with cats was such a fun idea! I took a brochure, looked up some more information about the organization, and decided to attend the volunteer Orientation today.
We were first introduced to the "headmistress" of the Bungalow. She told us the story of how the organization got started, and then proceeded to tell us the types of things we would need to know as volunteers. We were taught how to handle the cats and how to properly keep an eye on them and take care of them, given a tour of the house and of the new facility being built in the backyard, and finally told the next steps we needed to take and were signed up for a weekly time. We also got to hold a few of the cats: even the ones that were still "hissy," or not fully-trained yet. They're all so cute!!
But yeah, it's basically official: I will be volunteering at Kitty Bungalow Fridays from 3 to 5:30.
What takes me aback though, and makes me kind of nervous, is that we're going to have to be taught very basic medical skills. So... at the end of that training session, I'll be a very basic form of a Vet Tech. The most intense things I'll have to do are take the kittens' temperature (under the tail, you know), and should there be anything unusual in the litter boxes, take a sample of it to send to the lab.
Oh, there's also cleaning litter boxes, doing laundry, making sure the kittens eat ok and take note of when they don't....
I'm basically becoming a kitten nurse, as well as a teacher and friend to them.
I'm excited! But also terribly nervous that I'll screw up and some kitten will die because of me. Or that they'll give me some kind of disease while I'm working with them... they are cats, after all. Most of what the humans could catch from them is topical stuff, ringworm for example, but still. That would suck.
Anyways, I biked back from the Bungalow and grabbed some lunch at EVK, then went to the library to study and study and study. I sat in there for three and a half hours before going to dinner. Ugh. And the line for food was ridiculously long!!! I waited almost a half hour just to get food!!!
But I had a ton of fun talking with my friends while and after we ate! I'm so glad to have met such great people while I'm here. I spent a lot of time after dinner in Sneha and Kieryn's room just talking and laughing with them for a long time.
And now I'm here and worried once again that I'm signing myself for too much. I mean, the Bungalow is only once a week, but what will happen next semester when I'll try to be in a show and maybe even get a job? Am I going to be able to handle all of that?
I hope so. One thing's for sure: I made a commitment to the Bungalow that I want to keep. I've always wanted to volunteer with animals, and in doing this, I'll be saving some kitten lives. How amazing and fun and... once-in-a-lifetime is that? If I do ever have to back out of it, I don't want to say that I didn't do enough before I left. I want to help and be able to create a pet that will likely be loved and cherished for a long time (God-willing).
Part of me feels guilty... what about the people who need lives saved and things changed? At the same time... I've got more time than just this year. One step at a time, that's all.
I'll figure out a balance, some way...
Fight on, friends.

A Thorough Cultural Education- September 1, 2013
One thing I'm really loving about LA is every single day is full of an adventure of some kind or other.
This morning, Jinny and I had to drag ourselves out of bed in order to meet Sneha and Astha for breakfast at 8:30. We got some food at Starbucks, since EVK wasn't open, then headed to the Metro station for the first time...
It wasn't actually that bad. The confusing part is just knowing what bus/line connects to where, and how to figure out which location/line/bus you need to get to. TAP cards make it pretty easy if you know about how much the trip is going to cost in general.
The Metro ride was pretty good, and when we got to our transition stop at Culver City, there was a really nice man who helped us find where we were supposed to be next. We probably would've gotten lost without him, so I'm happy it happened. The actual bus to Santa Monica Pier was crowded and much more exciting.
According to the gentleman sitting behind where I stood, Chinese food makes you hungry again in 15 minutes. The details of why are probably not appropriate for me to post here. I ended up in the conversation when he noticed me and Jinny absolutely busting up laughing. We weren't laughing at him!!! Just... about the conversation topic. It was so amusing just to listen to. My part in the conversation was just this:
"Hey there, young lady. When you eat Chinese food, how long is it 'til you're hungry again?"
Me- "I don't know! I don't like Chinese food."
"Are you serious? You never eaten Chinese food?"
"I've eaten it, I just don't like it."
"And how long was it until you was hungry again after you eat it? Fifteen minutes?"
"Honestly, I don't remember! It was a while ago!"
I wish I could've given him an answer, but then he started asking every single person on the bus if his theory was true. It was so amusing and fun!!!
We got to the Pier, and I was immediately impressed. It reminded me so much of Santa Cruz! There were little souvenir shops, typical amusement park food, street performers, rides, and these amazing... almost finger-paint artists who almost tempted me into buying their artwork. We went on the roller coaster there instead, which was pretty fun since they let us ride it twice in a row! :)
Here's a few pictures:
After we got some lunch and explored a bit, we went down to the actual beach to eat and hang out in the sun. Well... Sneha and Astha did. Jinny and I spent a good hour or so down in the water. It was cold, but not nearly as cold as Santa Cruz, which was so fun!!! I even got to see a live sand dollar while we were playing around in the water!!
We sat out in the sun for a while after that, which is the point that I got both sunburned and dehydrated. I didn't bring enough water, and I didn't put on enough sunscreen soon enough.... if that makes sense. I had to awkwardly borrow a cup and some water from another group's cooler in order to stop feeling so sick sitting out there.
When we went back up to the pier, we did get some water and started to head back, but were stopped by parrots, snakes, and an iguana waiting at the top of the pier!!! The snakes were so fun to watch, but you had to pay to take pictures with them. The parrots were free. The owner literally walked up to people and put these tame, calm parrots right into their hands.
I was watching them, and texting my dad about how to get a hold of more water, when the man walked right up to me and plopped a little white guy, right on my shoulder. I say little, but I shouldn't. I had a parrot on my shoulder. It was awesome. I actually lifted him off my shoulder and onto my hand, but then he climbed right up my arm, about halfway, and pressed his little head right up against my chest. It was so cute!!!! His keeper said that he loved to cuddle, which makes sense, and the little parrot even lifted up a wing so he could be petted in his favorite spot. All four of us were petting him!!! We left a tip for the handler because of it. It was just so cool.
Sneha got some photos:
We made it back to campus just fine, and I did get more water in my water bottle. When we got back, it was about 4:15 in the afternoon, which meant I missed practice for one of the sports I was interested in (there wasn't room for me anyways, it turns out, so no loss!), but the other had just started practicing about an hour before... It was probably stupid of me, but I threw on some workout clothes and raced down to join them.
And then I played my first game of Quidditch.
In case you're not aware, Quidditch is the sport invented in the Harry Potter books. In the series, it's the sport at Hogwarts and in the Wizarding World where people fly around on brooms trying to get balls called Quaffles into the hoops to score points. Think... soccer, but flying. At the same time, there are players called Beaters trying to control balls called Bludgers. These balls fly around and aim themselves at people attempting to knock them out of line or, in dangerous cases, off their broomsticks. The Beaters manage these, trying to aim them toward their opponents to throw them off and give them an obstacle. And to top all that off, there's a very small, quick, golden ball called the Snitch that a player called the Seeker has to catch to end the game. Usually, whoever catches it wins, as it's worth quite a lot of points.
Well... we don't live in a Wizarding world, so instead, Muggle players (that is, those who are not wizards), run around the field with brooms between their legs. The Beaters hold Bludgers, trying to hit and tag other players with it in order to give them a disadvantage. Think... dodgeball or ultimate frisbee if you drop the frisbee. The Snitch is a track player wearing gold shorts. On these gold shorts is a velcro-attatched ball that the Seekers must pull off flag football-style to end the game.
I played a Chaser, who is, put simply, the one trying to score goals.
So Quidditch is, therefore, a game completely invented by J.K. Rowling that resembles soccer, ultimate Frisbee, dodgeball, track, and flag football all at the same time. Oh, and it's with one hand, since you're holding a broom between your legs, looking ridiculous.
It was so much fun.
And yet, much more tiring than I thought it would be, especially after a trip to Santa Monica! I'll be coming back to their free practices though. You only have to pay a fee if you want to actually compete against others or get a jersey. Otherwise, you can show up and play for fun, which I like.
I got cleaned up, and went to dinner then, where I met a new friend who absolutely schooled me in Disney knowledge/facts/trivia. Seriously. He knew every single date, character, cartoon, actor/actress, you name it. Being the competitive person I am, I'm slightly disappointed, but I'm still glad I met him. Maybe he can teach me more....
Ever since, I've been studying or at least attempting to study. I went to the Lounge to do so, and some guys came in after a while. I talked to some of them, but then too many showed up, so I'm calling studying quits for tonight. No school tomorrow, so I have all day tomorrow to get homework done and get all ready for my second week of college! Woo hoo!!
On an unrelated note... I need to watch my language: I'm finding I tend to over-exagerate facts and ideas when I relate them to other people. Simple little things too: "All of my friends" instead of "two of my friends" (in this case, about people posting similar things on Facebook), etc. That's not really being honest, and it's bugging me about myself. I'll work at changing this, and I'd like if you'd help keep me accountable.
What a great day. I learned about LA, sports, Disney, and people in my own dorm room. Looks like learning happens outside of the classroom too.
Learn on, and Fight on, friends.

Think. Really: Think!- August 31, 2013
What do you believe in?
I'm not talking about religion here, because I know a lot of readers of this blog are Christian. I'm talking about standards. Moral, unbiased, unreligious standards of the way life should be. In your ideal world, what would happen?
In mine, I wouldn't get up late and I would work out more often. Today I got up at 9:30 and went to get a brunch-type meal a while later. In my ideal world, I would actually eat three meals a day.
Most of my day was spent doing stuff on my to do list and studying. All my studying was from one class... I really underestimated how much I had to read for this class, so hopefully today helped me make some headway.
Ideally, I would be able to know all I was supposed to do and section it out appropriately. And not get bored in the library after sitting there for an hour and a half.
I wish I had time to read a normal book.
I wish I didn't miss my friends back home so much.
I wish it wasn't so freaking hot outside.
I tried to get some Lemonade as a study break, but the shop "Lemonade" was closed for the weekend. I settled with lemonade from Seeds.
My friends and I then had a little pow wow because we decided to make plans to explore the city tomorrow. We almost went to Disneyland. Almost! The ticket office at school is closed though, and even though it's a small discount, it would've still been a discount for the tickets.
Maybe in my ideal world, Disneyland would be either a lot cheaper or free.
We decided on the Santa Monica Pier instead. Hopefully that'll be fun!
After dinner at EVK, Jinny and I came back to the room to study more. I took a shower, and we were sitting at our desks concentrating on our work, when I noticed something out our window. My next words were such:
"Oh my gosh, Jinny, look outside!"
Two firetrucks, an ambulence, and a DPS car. With the lights on, but no sirens.
Jinny asked me, "Do you want to run downstairs and see what's up?"
We bolted down the hall, down the stairs, and opened the door to the stairwell. Down the hall were a bunch of officials and medics, very slowly bringing a stretcher down the hall with a boy in it. He looked passed out: his pants were down to his ankles (there was a cloth covering his... well... you know), a plastic bag all around his neck (just in case he puked, probably), and he was completely delirious. Didn't say a thing, but slumped down a couple times.
We saw him get wheeled past the stairwell door, and bolted right back up the stairs to our window to see him get put into the ambulance, and all the cars drive away.
Very clearly, alcohol poisoning. It's only been a week, but this isn't the first time it's happened at the school.
But it was the first time it happened to me.
I don't mean literally: I'm ok, not intoxicated at all, and didn't get pulled away on a stretcher. But not even Jinny had ever seen someone in this state ever before.
We went to the lounge to get some more information about how he got that drunk, and who the guy was, in general, then knocked on Sneha's door to tell her what had happened. She told us another story about a boy who got expelled from college, this year, for smoking weed in his room.
We ended up spending a countless amount of time in Sneha's room, just talking about how stupid people can be. We talked about alcohol and drugs, then rape and our messed-up rape culture, sex, pornography, then children, abortion, politics, the gun control laws, the death penalty... and then we came back to the room and realized it was 1 in the morning.
But it got me thinking... what would our culture look like without these issues? Without alcohol and drug abuse? Or without alcohol and drugs in general? What should the gun control laws be? What is wrong (or right) about the death penalty?
What would our world look like without boys being carried away in stretchers just because they tried to prove their worth in the bottom of a shot glass?
I'll tell you what it looks like now: like all of our worth fits in that shot glass.
I thought I knew before how I felt about these things. I thought I knew what to expect here. I thought I was so certain and rock-solid on my opinions and stances on these issues in life. Now... now I'm not so sure on some of those things. Now I'm wondering, what do I actually think?
What would my ideal world look like not just for my life, but for the world I'm living in today?
And that got me thinking: That's why we're in college, isn't it? To make a change in this world. To learn how messed up and screwed up and absolutely.... just.... shit our world and our society can be, but to do something about it in whatever way we can.
But what can we do? Where do we begin?
That I don't know... but I do feel... almost empowered by thinking about this. I may be ignorant; I'll admit it, I am, especially compared to how much some people here know about the world and it's issues from their different perspectives. I may be ignorant, but that doesn't mean I can't do something. There has got to be something I can do... somehow... some way... in my own way.
Maybe we all can.
I'm going to bed tonight with Sam's words to Frodo ringing in my ears:
"Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding onto something...
That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for."
For peace, for love, for hope, and for goodness... Fight on, friends.
